A year ago today, F and I were making our way back to Guanajuato from Veracruz. It was freezing cold and raining. Just the week before, we had been swimming in the Gulf of Mexico and biking our way in shorts along the backroads of Catemaco. The final days of 2007 had been so sweet, full of sunshine and warmth. 2008 came in like a lion, bearing her fangs.
And what a year it was! Full of challenges, decisions, and transformation. It seems as though everyone I knew was going through-or went through-something exceptionally demanding. It was less than a year ago that I decided to sell everything I own, take leave of dear friends, and move to Mexico not knowing what would lay in store. I can’t say that it has been easy.
But last night was absolutely stupendous. Midnight found San Miguel celebrating with full sail! The firework choreography blew everyone away and we danced until the band played its final song. The jardin was filled to maximum capacity with folks from all over the world, happy, dancing, and welcoming in the New Year.
Today was downright balmy. We strolled along sunny streets and sat in the jardin a long time, watching families, couples, tourists, and other folks enjoy the festive holiday. People were lounging about, eating chips with salsa, and blowing bubbles. It seemed that the plaza was a little brighter and a little more hopeful. I’m hoping that this day, January 1st, is a good indicator of what lays in front of us for 2009.
This is a great picture!!!! Bring on the New Year.
Happy 2009! I hope it’s full of light and love and lots of dancing!
